JPO builds highway to Brazil

The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) and the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) have agreed to a Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH).

Under the agreement, the BPTO and JPO will aim to reduce patent examination time. The pilot programme will come into effect on 1 April and will last either two years, or when both offices have serviced 200 applications. It’s JPO’s 36th PPH agreement.

The BPTO will only accept patent applications related to IT and mechanical technology and limit the number of PPH requests by one applicant to six every four months. The JPO will accept applications in any field and accept unlimited applications from a single applicant.

Japan already has PPH agreements with 35 patent granting entities around the world, including the UK Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Brazil launched its PPH pilot project with the USPTO in January last year.
