Avanci signs patent deal with BMW

Avanci has signed a patent licence agreement with BMW Group, providing it with standard essential patents (SEPs) for wireless technology.

Last year, telecommunications inventors joined together to create Avanci, which aimed to create a single licence for SEPs for the internet of things, through patents from the likes of Ericsson, Qualcomm, InterDigital, KPN and ZTE.

The patent portfolio will be offered to BMW at a flat rate, which will not increase over the term of the licence, no matter how many additional patent owners join the platform.

Kasim Alfalahi, founder and CEO of Avanci, commented: “Our agreement with BMW Group and its supplier demonstrates our commitment to finding a common ground between the different industries that must cooperate together in the internet of things.”

He added: “Ultimately, we’re committed to provide a simpler way to handle licensing in the internet of things space by taking into account both patent owners’ and internet of things device manufacturers’ business models to increase certainty, reduce risk and streamline technology sharing for all involved.”
