Ropes & Gray hires leading PTAB litigator

Ropes & Gray has recruited leading US Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) litigator Scott McKeown.

The firm pegs McKeown as “one of the nation’s most experienced counsel in post-grant proceedings”.

McKeown, who previously worked at Oblon, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt as chair of its post-grant patent practice, will join Ropes & Gray as partner and chair of the firm’s PTAB practice and working out of the firm’s Washington DC office.

Ropes & Gray said his addition will add a strong element to the firm’s IP practice.

Richard McCaulley, chair of Ropes & Gray’s IP litigation practice, said: “The PTAB can be an attractive alternative to the time-consuming and costly traditional avenues for patent litigation and defence.”

“Scott McKeown’s experience with post-grant proceedings will be a significant asset to our clients. Scott is recognized as a thought leader in this space, and has been from the inception of the PTAB.”

Commenting on his move, McKeown said: “I’m honoured to join Ropes & Gray’s premier intellectual property team.”

“Having previously partnered with the firm for joint clients, I was impressed by the collaborative culture and depth of litigation expertise. The firm’s complex IP work for high-profile technology companies is a perfect fit for both me and my practice.”
